PROGRAM

PLACE: "San Ignacio de Loyola" Auditorium of the Universidad del Salvador (Tucumán 1845, City of Buenos Aires).

8.30 a.m. - Registration.

9.00 a.m. - Opening ceremony presided over by Dr. Juan A. Tobias, President of USAL, and with the presence of Dr. Luis Vicente Giay, elected President and representative of the Rotary Foundation.

9.15 a.m. - Speech by Dr. Juan Javier Negri, President of Buenos Aires Rotary Club.

10.00 a.m. - Keynote speech: "Challenges and opportunities in the construction of peace", by Prof. Pedro Valenzuela, politologist of the University of Pittsburgh (USA), specialist in peace and conflict resolution topics of Uppsala University (Sweden).

11.00 a.m. - Break.

The Seminar continues its activities at USAL School of Economic Sciences (Marcelo T. de Alvear 1335).

11.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. - PANELS

PANEL I: POWER AND DISCOURSE IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

  • "Brazil foreign policy towards South America during the administration of Luiz Inácio 'Lula' da Silva", by Vivian Eichler (Brazil).
  • "USA foreign policy towards Argentina during George W. Bush first term", by Janie Hulse (USA).
  • "Power relations in the interpretation of terrorism", by Umar Shavurov (Kyrgyzstan).

Moderator: Prof. Martín González.

PANEL II: SOCIAL EXCLUSION: A CHALLENGE IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF PEACE IN LATIN AMERICA

  • "Brazilian civil society, promoting a culture of peace?", by Gert Danielsen (Norway).
  • "Social cleanliness: sexual minorities in Colombia", by William Payne (Canada).
  • "Globalization and alimentary security", by Mary Solie (USA).

Moderator: Prof. Raúl Bisio.

1.30 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. - OPTIONAL WORKSHOPS

Two interactive sessions for the debate and reflection on topics related to the construction of peace. Pre-registration required. (more information)

  1. "Visioning and constructing a culture of peace", coordinated by Gert Danielsen.
  2. "Participative introduction to the work of violence reduction teams in conflict areas", coordinated by William Payne.

PANNEL III: SOCIAL CHANGE AS A DEMAND FOR CONFLICT TRANSFORMATION

  • "Reconciliation - an introduction", by Ryan Gawn (Northern Ireland).
  • "Promotion of democratic strengthening: the Etiophian experience", by Kimberly Karnes (USA).
  • "Promotion of dialogue and participation of the bases in the democratic strengthening: the Venezuelan case", by María Alejandra Ramírez (Mexico).

PANEL IV: INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AS A TOOL FOR THE LOCAL DEVELOPMENT

  • "Conclusions about the administration of the Official Development Agency (ODA) in Argentine municipalities", Gabriela Messing (Argentina).
  • "International Cooperation regarding children in street situation in Buenos Aires", by Iva Tobiaskova (Czheck Republic).

17.00 a 17.45 - Closing ceremony with the participation of Dr. Luis Vicente Giay, from Rotary International, and Dr. Fernando Lucero Schmidt, Vicepresident for Research and Development of the Universidad del Salvador.
