Objectives of the Research Department

Within the scope of the Vice-Chancellorship Research and Development, the Research Department pursues the following objectives:

  To improve research support services.

  Develop guidelines for the ongoing self-assessment of the research activities belonging to Institutes, Centres and Areas of the University.

  Implement follow-up programmes and technical     support of such research work.

  Foster interdisciplinary work.

  Propose incentives to researchers;

  Administrate an area for  prospective planning in      order to establish proposals for the future;

  Expand the possibilities of access to systems of scientific information as support to research and teaching;

  Coordinate efforts with other national and          international institutions in order to carry out programmes and research projects with and for the community.

Research Institutes and  Laboratories

Within the scope of the Vice-Chancellorship of Research and Development are Research Institutes which form part of the Vice-Chancellorship itself such as the Institute for Drug Addiction Prevention, The Environment and Ecology, the International Institute for Complex Thought ; the International Institute of Scientific Research with its Virtual Scientific Centre, the Institute of  Corporation and Economy Law of the Mercosur  and the International Institute of Studies and Formation on Government and Society. Taking these institutes into account, there are within the USAL: 26 Institutes, 4 Centres, 10 Areas and 1 Extension  Chair that perform research activities. Similarly, the USAL  has 52 laboratories, 1 room for Sylvan Prommetric Examination, 1 AATP room, 3 Weather Stations, 2 Hydrologic Stations, 4 Hydrometric Stations, 1 biotherium, 3 workshops and 1 astronomic observatory.

Annual Survey of the research activities

According to the annual survey report of the Secretary for Technology, Science and Productive Innovation (SeTCIP) "Survey of the bodies carrying out scientific and technologic activites", 270 researchers were registered in our data base sponsored by the USAL (20 full- time, 102 part-time,27 technical staff, 95 support staff, 26 staff in other activities of S and T) for the period March 2002- March 2003; 46 researchers from the CONICET, 10 at our premises; 168 ad honorem researchers and 268 outside researchers  belonging to national and international institutions who developed 122 research projects.

As a result, 344 publications were issued, including books, chapters of books and articles in bulletins and in academic and scientific journals; and 172 reports and communications to congresses (14 international congresses and 32 national congresses).

Data Base and statistical information

The main tool for the whole survey and processing of the research activities in the USAL is an operating data base.

which covers information about researchers, examiners, projects, publications, communications and awards of the whole University. This constitutes reference  material for doing statistical reports, designing different tables and relational  graphs according to the required indicators, specific listings per year, unit, researchers and disciplines as well as for the acquisition of the scientific production indicators for decision making.

Until the present time, the applications functional prototypes have been concluded in order to link the Researchers and Projects modules, with the data supporting them. At the same time reports have been done as well as surveys for the daily reports carried out by the Research Department. The  whole list of researchers 1995-2002 has also been loaded on the data base.

Distance Learning Course on the Introduction to Scientific Research

The course Distance Learning Course on the  Introduction to Scientific Research is currently given at the International Institute of Scientific Research. The course involves delivering  higher education that demands the interrelationship between classic knowledge and that derived from a permanent update which bring about a society undergoing constant transformation through the development of new information and communication technologies.

The course is meant to provide tools for the introduction to scientific research that contributes to developing in the teacher skills to teach and understand scientific phenomena.

The course begins in August 2004 and at present has 60 participants enrolled, with 48 students attending on a regular basis and 4 graduated students.

Similarly, the course has been submitted to the Government of the City of Buenos Aires together with the Distance Learning programme according to the requirements requested by the Education Department -GCBA. The same material was presented to the following provinces: Córdoba, Entre Ríos, La Pampa, Mendoza, Misiones, Río Negro, Salta, San Juan. Similarly, the province of Buenos Aires was asked  for the sponsorship and declaration of interest.
